Criminal Investigation Division

The Criminal Investigation Division is a plain-clothes section within the Truro Police Service, and is responsible for the investigations requiring longer periods of time for completion. These investigations may lead to charges. The Criminal Investigation Division is known to many as the Detective Section.

The Criminal Investigation Division is responsible for investigations such as homicide, sexual assaults, robbery, thefts, break and enters, frauds, and numerous other Criminal Code offenses. The Criminal Investigation Division has a very good relationship with police agencies across Canada and also with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. At this time, our section would like to provide the public with information on cheque and credit card fraud.

The definition of Fraud as listed in Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary: Deceit, Trickery: intentional perversion of truth in order to induce another to part with something of value or to surrender a legal right. An act of deceiving or misrepresenting: TRICK. One who is not what he pretends to be: IMPOSTER

When receiving a cheque, be sure to check the ending dollar amounts appearing on the cheque making sure the numeral and words are identical. Some frauds are committed by stealing personal or company cheques which have been made payable to individuals. Sometime criminals will forge these cheques for deposit or cash. In some cases the same is true for credit cards. If receiving credit cards by mail make sure to check your mail personally. Have an approximate date in which you should receive the credit card or cheques. This can be set up with your banking institution or fiance company, and be sure to advise their office should there be a delay in receiving.
